The Effect of Hoax News regarding COVID-19 Vaccination on the Belief of Different Age Groups

  Abstract

Vaccine hesitancy remains to be a barrier in the world’s battle against the coronavirus disease. Regardless of the assurance from various specialists, a growing number of people are skeptical about getting vaccinated, which can be attributed to misinformation circling around the web. In order to determine the effect of hoax news in social media on vaccine hesitancy, the researchers analyzed 51 questionnaires completed by people coming from different generations regarding the interrelationship of the rise of hoax news in social media, and their respective age groups with their acceptance of the COVID-19 vaccines. Our results indicate that social media elevates the probability of people getting victimized by the hoax news in social media which results in the hesitancy to get vaccinated. Moreover, the results of the research show that older generations such as the Baby Boomer Generation and Generation X are more susceptible to hoax news as compared to the younger generations.
